Wonderfully staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have zero higher difficulties into the life style down their extremely unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

The film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, sets up an excellent multidimensional chess game, to possess mortal limits, between Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s spouse (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sister (Nina Foch) worked within gambling enterprise and you will old a great corrupt detective (Jim Bannon). The latest caustically epigrammatic script, new cast’s suavely managed body language regarding love and you can menace, and you will Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may fashionably cocky photos (also his political conscience) make this pugnacious but really in depth spectacle an invisible antique of your genre.” [ 10 ]

Even though the area uses a common trend, the newest characterizations was new therefore the shows good enough so you’re able to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you may topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney reach. Uncommon cam bases show up now and then so you can heighten notice and you may briefly stop the eye. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling because manager-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, completely new publisher and you may affiliate producer, and additionally helps with making this a smooth design.” [ 11 ]

Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice little lady which brings forth brand new best in him and Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you may slinky vixen which gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily as villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a different sort of able tour because an exhausted police inspector exactly who in the long run closes the fact. A great amount of consuming and you may puffing is done by all concerned.” [ a dozen ]
